Hurricane in Haiti: Running After Trucks, Calling for Aid

Emergency assistance team enters Haiti

On October 13, the first team of Emergency Assistance Team (Kazuya OMURO and Asako IKEGAMI) from Association for Aid and Relief Japan (AAR Japan) has entered Haiti to provide support to people left devastated by the extremely destructive Hurricane Matthew. According to the United Nations, 473 people lost their lives and 1.4 million people, 600,000 of them children, are in need of emergency assistance (UNOCHA, October 13th, 2016).

After conducting an assessment in Jérémie district in Grand'Anse Province and Les Cayes district in South Province, AAR Japan local staff found emergency aid supplies such as food to be in highest of demands. They witnessed people running after trucks, desperately calling for aid. Furthermore, facilities for People with Disabilities (PWD) and schools and preschools attended by many PWD children had roofs blown off the building and windows broken, causing water to pool inside. At this time, these facilities cannot reopen.

Temporary fix by using blue sheets to cover the roofs

AAR Japan will continue to conduct assessments and begin distribution of aid supplies including provisions and hygiene products.
