Evening Forum: Future in which Robots Kill Humans[March 25th, 2016]


To Prevent Murders Committed by Robots

“Killer robots” are weapons that can autonomously select and engage targets without human judgement and are also called “lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS).” They don’t exist yet, but if these robots are deployed, it would be possible to kill targets without any human intervention.

In April 2013, an international coalition of civil society, the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, was launched to prevent the development of killer robots. AAR Japan has participated as a member of steering committee of this campaign since its foundation, with the belief that killer robots are not merely a political or military matter, but a humanitarian one on which civil society need work together,

What are the problems of killer robots? How advanced is the development?

AAR Japan will host an evening forum with Ms. Mary Wareham, Global Coordinator of the Campaign, and Mr. Shoichi Nagayoshi, Senior Specialist of Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a guest speaker. Please join us in the event to learn more about Killer Robots and the international reaction to them.

As of March 1st 2016, 59 organizations from 26 countries participate in the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, and we are looking for more organizations to join. If your organization is interested, please contact AAR Japan or of the campaign coordinator.
